Growing up (as children AND well into our teenage years!), my sisters and I decorated cookies for "Santa". And everything was homemade. Mom made the cookie dough and the icing. I still remember the bowls we used for the icing and how I would stick my fingers in them when no one was looking! Her icing is the best. Cookie making and decorating is one of my most vivid and precious Christmas traditions with my family.

This is the first Christmas in--ummm--I'm not sure how many years-- that my sisters and I have all lived in the same town. I love it so much.

We all got together tonight so the boys could decorate their Santa cookies (a continued tradition perhaps?).

My heart was so happy tonight seeing this:

It was so neat for me to sit and watch them decorate and see their sweet personalities shine. While each of them is so much like their daddies, I clearly saw my sisters in each of them tonight. Henry (the older of the 2 and son to my older sister, Kristen) was in such charge. He's a leader and he's very vocal! He wants everything "just so" and gets flustered when things don't go his way! It's just so Kristen.

Jones (the sweet "little"one and son to the little sister, Heather), is the entertainer. He's just hilarious. He's so chill, and everything he says and does is precious and funny. It's so Heather.

I love the simple reminders that God gives me when I'm with these sweet ones.

I used to think that if I never get married or have children of my own, I'll never feel happy or complete. Or that I'll spend my entire life being completely lonely.

Obviously God only knows the plans of my future--but right now I know that my life is happy and complete. I'm complete because I have the most amazing parents in the world, 2 sisters who are my best friends in life, a BAZILLION other best friends, and 2 nephews and a niece that I truly love as if they were my very own.

I AM BLESSED and particularly thankful for Henry and Jones for reminding me tonight that my life is full of love and happiness.

...and it'll be oh-so-fun when this little princess gets to join her brother and cousin in Christmas decorating in a year or 2!

So...on the topic of Christmas traditions--what are some of your favorites?

surgery, friends, and GIVING.

First off, I had surgery last Friday, and for those of you who were aware and said prayers, thank you! It wasn't anything serious, but I do appreciate the cards, calls, texts, etc. I felt very loved and taken care of! I had to take medical leave from school, so I missed the last 4 days with my kiddos. It's now officially Christmas break so I won't be seeing them until January 9 (YAY FOR CHRISTMAS BREAK!), but I know I'm gonna miss their little faces.

My surgery went well, and recovery has been so much easier than I anticipated. The first couple of days were tough, but truly nothing like I expected. I'm thankful that it's over, that my recovery is going smoothly, and that I can now enjoy the holidays!

You all know about my dear friends Meredith and Claire. It's been a year since the last time the 3 of us were together so I've been counting down the days to when we could be together again. It's just never often enough. They were both in town for Christmas, and the only night we were all able to get together was Tuesday (only 4 days after my surgery), so I honestly didn't think I'd even feel like doing much at all. Fortunately, I felt just well enough to have Mexican with these two! Maybe I pushed myself a little too soon, but it was totally worth it. And I haven't done much except relax since then (just in case you care...).

ANYWAY---

Here we are--you know--just being all cute and stuff.... ;)

Since Meredith lives in Texas, I don't get to see this sweet little face much either.

Sweet Madeleine! Still sometimes hard for me to believe that Mere has a child!:) She's just beautiful.

Now...I leave you with this.

If you're anything like me, you get tired of all of the depressing news you see on TV and read about online and in the newspaper--especially this time of the year!

How refreshing it was to read this article about someone's selfless act of giving this Christmas.

Exactly 5 years ago today, I posted my first entry on this blog!

First of all, Hi.

My posts seem to be few and far between these days, but hoping that'll all change SOON. I'm having a minor surgical procedure done next Friday, and blogging is on my to-do-list while I'm recovering!

Anyway...

Some of you fellow Mississippians may have heard about the tragic shooting that took place in New Albany last night. A high school coach and his wife were shot (his wife was killed) in what seemed to be a random shooting. I understand that the wife was about 30, and she and her husband have a little girl. It's hard to make sense of any crime, but murdering an innocent woman? I just don't get it.

I can't imagine what this family is experiencing right now--especially since it's Christmas.

Please join me in praying for the Price family!

Now...on to a much happier topic...

Despite the nasty, rainy weather last Saturday, Candy, Chad and I threw on our ponchos and sat in the stadium for the entire Egg Bowl.

Was it worth it?....

ABSOLUTELY.

The Egg stays in Starkville for another year, and in my opinion, the world is as it should be once again. This win also made us bowl eligible. YIPPEE!

We're SOAKING.WET. but having a blast!

Yep. 3rd post for today. I guess having more time to blog is an advantage to being sick!

Now. Let's talk pumpkins!

I'm not a fan of the traditional pumpkin pie. However, I absolutely love almost everything else pumpkin-flavored!

I've found some oh-so-fabulous pumpkin recipes on Pinterest and thought I'd share. I haven't made any of them yet, but I'm planning to try a few this week!

Pumpkin Dip

Kristen made this once and it was SO good with Ginger Snaps!

Ingredients:

1 (8 oz) pkg. cream cheese

2 c powder sugar

1 (15 oz) can pumpkin pie filling

1 t ground cinnamon

1/2 t ground ginger

Beat cream cheese and sugar at medium speed with an electric mixer until smooth. Add pie filling, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and ginger, beating well. Cover and chill 8 hours.

Up next...

Pumpkin Puppy Chow

Yes. You read that correctly. PUMPKIN.PUPPY.CHOW.

It's no secret that "regular" puppy chow is a holiday favorite of mine, so I know I'm going to LOVE this.

For this you'll only need 3 ingredients!:

9 cups rice chex cereal

1 bag of pumpkin Hershey Kisses (I'm going to be so mad if I'm unable to find these!)

1 1/2 cups of powdered sugar.

Here's the super simple recipe:

First, prep your powdered sugar and cereal. Second, using a double broiler method, melt your Hershey Kisses, stirring constantly. The kisses will reach a nice creamy consistency. Third, pour your melted kisses over your cereal in a bowl and mix and stir. Once you feel your chex are covered, dump into a bag with your powdered sugar and shake

Moving on...

Pumpkin Chocolate Chip Cookies

I'm worried about how many of these I may accidentally consume at one time. Yikes.

Ingredients:

1 cup canned pumpkin

1 cup white sugar

1/2 cup vegetable oil

1 egg

2 cups all-purpose flour

2 teaspoons baking powder

2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 teaspoon milk

1 tablespoon vanilla extract

2 cups semisweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

How to:

1.Combine pumpkin, sugar, vegetable oil, and egg. In a separate bowl, stir together flour, baking powder, ground cinnamon, and salt. Dissolve the baking soda with the milk and stir in. Add flour mixture to pumpkin mixture and mix well.

2.Add vanilla, chocolate chips and nuts.

3.Drop by spoonful on greased cookie sheet and bake at 350 degrees F (175 degrees C) for approximately 10 minutes or until lightly brown and firm.

The next one is an "adults only" holiday drink!:)

This just looks so yummy and festive! Wouldn't this be perfect for a holiday party (or family Thanksgiving?!)

Pumpkin Martini

Ingredients:

1/2 oz Sylk Cream Liqueur

2 oz vanilla vodka

1/2 oz pumpkin liqueur or pumpkin spice syrup

1 tsp whipped cream

cinnamon stick for garnish

Preparation:

Pour the Sylk Liqueur and vodka into a shaker filled with ice.

Shake well.

Add the pumpkin liqueur or syrup.

Shake again.

Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Top with a teaspoon of whipped cream.

Garnish with a cinnamon stick.

...and finally....

The final pumpkin yummy requires no prep at all! So, if you're not in the mood to do any baking, mixing, or stirring, this one is for you!

A couple of years ago, I compiled a list A-Z of things for which I'm thankful. I created a list for this year and compared it to my first one. Though some of the things are the same, there are many new things added this year!

Here's my 2011 list:

A: Another day! Though life is hard and exhausting, I'm grateful for each new day I'm here on this Earth.

B: Brothers (in-law)! They're just fantastic.

C: Computers! What was life like before Internet, email, Facebook, Twitter, Blogger, and Pinterest?

D: Deep South Pout! My new favorite boutique in Starkville. Love the clothes and atmosphere but love the people even more!:)
E: Eight-year-olds! Though my students drive me nuts sometimes, I still love them dearly (all 25 of them!)!
F: Friends! I have THE.BEST.
G: Grandparents! They all hold a special place in my heart.
H: Henry! My almost 5 year old nephew. My buddy!

I: Independence. I'm 30 years old and single. Being on my own and knowing I can make it on my own, is a wonderful feeling. I'm thankful that I am don't depend on a spouse (or anybody else!) to survive! God really is all I need.

J: Jones! My 1 1/2 year old nephew. My favorite little man.

K: K-Love! Besides country music radio stations, this is the only other station I listen to!

L: Laughter. As Charlie Chaplin says "A day without laughter is a day wasted." Couldn't agree more.

M: Max! My pup (duh).

N: Noelle! My sweet new niece...

O: Old people. Seriously. You can learn so much from them!

P: Parents! I'm blessed.

Q: QUIET'NESS'. Those who know me well, know that as social as I can be, I also very very much love "me" time.

R: Relationship with God! It's the most important of them all!

S: Sisters! They're my favorite! I would be a sad person without them.

T: Teacher friends! What would I do without them?

U: MY University--Mississippi State of course!

V: Veterans! Never will we ever be able to repay all of those who have served or are continuing to serve in the military and fight for our great country. As I've gotten older, I've begun to appreciate the selflessness of these men and women more and more. If you are one of them, then THANK YOU!

W: Wireless capabilities! Confession: I love my cell phone!

X: X-mas. Not a fan of the "x" replacing the "Christ", it was the best I could do with this letter. Christmas is, after all, the most wonderful time of the year!

Y: Yesterday. Not literally, but you know what I mean here. I'm thankful for my past. I've felt lots of happiness and lots of sadness. My heart has been broken, abused, stomped on, cheated, and hurt, but I'm THANKFUL for that. I wouldn't be who I am without the good times (and bad times!) of my past.

Z: zzzzzzzzz.... Never will you meet someone who values a good night's sleep as much as I do!

It was MSU homecoming last weekend (yay for a "W"!!!). The weather was beautiful and I got to hang out with some really fun people! I love tailgating. LOVE it.

Wish List Wednesday

Now, we all know that nothing beats my dear friend MSKS's "Wish List Wednesdays," (I look forward to hers every week....don't you?) but I've been doing a little wishing myself on this Wednesday, so I thought I'd share.

I wish...

1. ...that every week was a 4 day work week. I'm grateful for mine this week!

2. ...that I could pull off being a redhead. I've wanted red hair for as long as I can remember!

7. ...that I was going to a Halloween costume party this year. I would most definitely want to wear this!

Goodness gracious. Where have I been?

Well...I wish I could say that I met...

....we fell madly in love, and then we lived

even that I was here (preferrably with the ~~handsome, rich~~, nice man mentioned above) :

But alas, that's just not the case.
Sad.

Here's a little of what really has kept me busy these past several weeks...

Folks, let me tell you something. I love teaching. I do. (Why else would I do it after all?) But, so far, this has been the most challenging year in all my 8 years of teaching. Don't get me wrong, I love my students, principals, and co-workers, so pinpointing exactly what is making this year so difficult has been challenging. I'm not here to complain (I'm so very thankful to have a job!), but I just thought I owed a partial explanation as to why I've been so slackerish with the blog. Hopefully, my priorities will get back to normal soon, and blogging will be back at the top of my list! :)
In all seriousness, though, there have been some issues--both school-related and non school-related---that have been going on in the past couple of months. Prayers appreciated....

You may remember a fairly recent post of mine about a dear coworker of mine, Angelia Gandy, who was in a terrible automobile accident (resulting in the death of one of her sons).

Well...

GOOD NEWS: She has been undergoing rehabilitation to recover from severe injuries sustained in the wreck and is making a remarkable recovery.

In an effort to offset her staggering medical costs, some of the teachers at my school are donating items at a public garage sale.

When: Saturday, October 8, 2011; 8-11:30

Where: Starkville Sportsplex

The community garage sale includes home items, school uniforms, children's clothes and much, much more!

There will also be a silent auction, raffle, bake sale, coke products, sno-cones, pizza, and jumpers.

It will be such a FUN way for people like YOU to help!

I know I'm a crazy aunt.

I talk about my niece and nephews like they're my own. I know, I know.

I just can't help it really.

Since my sisters are my 2 favorite people, it's hard not to be obsessed with their precious children.

I just had to post this one tonight.

Now...considering that the past several posts have been about nothing other than those 2 cute little boys and that sweet baby girl, I ~~promise~~ will try to come up with a different topic for my next post.

Ever tried to get a 4 and a half year old, 1 and a half year old, and newborn all to cooperate for a picture?

I think this was my first time to witness such an event. It's exhausting.

Fortunately, if you catch Henry in the right mood, he'll sit still for a few minutes for a picture or two (he's my sister's child, after all!). Also, Noelle is obviously immobile, so she's pretty easy too (unless she's eating, sleeping, or pooping! Her 3 favorite things!).

Now...Jones is another story. He's a toddler, and though I'm not a parent, I would think that the toddler years would be the most challenging. Jones is a sweet, SWEET boy, but he's so active and into everything! Heather wasn't sure how Jones would react to meeting Noelle for the first time. We all actually thought that he would really care nothing about her at this point. After all, he's got more important things on his mind, like food and balls!

We were wrong though.

He wants to touch her constantly, and says "awww!!!!" when he sees her.

It really is the sweetest thing!

Getting him still for a picture is another story though.

He's not really quite at the age where he understands to pause and smile when there's a camera present.

And again, he really just cares about food and balls.

Anyway....here are just a few of the attempts of the 3 of them together (please note that Kristen, Heather, and I were all using our cameras at one time, hoping to capture just one of Jones being still!)

I love this one, but neither boy was really interested in actually looking at the camera.

Those of you who know me, know that I can be trusted. I can and will keep a secret, but I really REALLY don't like to!

That's why I was so excited when my dear friend Katey let the cat out of the bag and announced that baby Overstreet #3 is on its way!

Those boys are just so stinking cute. I guess the odds are that baby #3 will be a boy, but I'm predicting GIRL! Noelle Adams will need a friend after all! :)

Despite the outcome of last night's game, we State fans still had a blast and we'll continue to GRIND FOR OUR STATE!!!

10 years...

If you're like me, you stop what you're doing every year on September 11, and think about the events that occurred 10 years ago (obviously never being fully able to really comprehend the magnitude of it).

10 YEARS.

Wow.

I always think about where I was and what I was doing on that day in 2001.

I'm generally glued to my TV every 9/11 rewatching video footage I've seen a hundred times. Again--still being unable to truly comprehend how and why something like that really happened. The bravery of the citizens in this country still amazes me.

It's unbelievable to think that my 2nd graders this year weren't even born when the events of 9/11 occurred. While I didn't want to scare my students, I did want them to know and have somewhat of an understanding about this historical event. I spent some time thinking about how I could introduce this topic to my students.

Fortunately, my school is having our annual book fair, and while browsing (& trying to refrain from spending $200 on children's books!), I came across this book:

"September 12th: We Knew Everything Would Be All Right"

I took it off the shelf, read it, and teared up immediately. It was written and illustrated by 1st graders, so it's written in a way that my 7 & 8 year olds can understand. It's such a fabulous book, and if you're a teacher or a parent, I highly recommend you purchasing it! It 's a perfect way to explain to children what happened on that fateful day, and explaining to them that unfortunately bad things do happen sometimes, tomorrow always brings a new day! (A children's book with adult-like lessons!).

One of my favorite radio stations, KLove, is encouraging listeners to make a promise to bless and love others today to honor those who lost their lives on 9/11/01.

Hey folks! The 2011-2012 school year is underway, and I'm sorta kinda starting to feel like a normal routine is well on its way. I'm so very thankful for that!

Anyway...

Here are couple of topics for tonight's post:

1. Claire! My fellow 30 year old friend! Claire turned the big 3-0 on Friday, and I was pumped to spend the weekend with her in the 'ham. Some of her Bham friends hosted a party for her, and it was fun to get to go.

Tomorrow is my students' first day of school! Even though this is my 8th "first day of school" as a teacher, I still get a little nervous at the beginning of each year. I'm excited, though, and looking forward to meeting my 24 students tomorrow!

Calling all middle sisters!

I'm a middle sister. I have an older sister (Kristen) and a younger sister (Heather), but if you read my blog you already knew that I guess. What you probably didn't know is that I'm in the very VERY middle---Kristen is 2 years and 2 months older than me, and Heather is 2 years and 2 months younger than me.

See? I told you. Smack dab in the middle.

So imagine the excitement I felt when I discovered this wine a few years ago!

It's not really like me to go more than a couple of days or so without blogging, but I guess the end of my summer has just been crazy chaos!

Where have I been and what have I been doing, you ask?

Well, here's an attempt to summarize the end of my fantastic summer...

I was so happy to get to spend some time with this friend in Tennessee!

She's a school counselor, so we both were able to enjoy having the summer off!

...Oh...and while I was there, I decided that I needed to follow the feather trend (I guess Shannon brings out my "funky" side!). Even though I've been told that I'm too old for it, I'm still loving it! Judge me if you want (but please don't!).

....I was also so happy (obviously!) to get some time with "my" little man on the coast. What a honey pie he is! He's at such a fun age, and I love every second I get to spend with him.

....I also got to hang out with these cute girls

at Deep South Pout! I started out just a customer, but by the end of the summer, I was working a little at the store! :) Haven't been there or visited their website yet? If not, then it's time you do! I love them AND their store!

I went here

where I attended an Autism conference with some co-workers. Great conference and such a FUN place to visit!
And finally....

about school...

a good bit of the month of July was spent here...

I'm getting ready for my new class!

My first day back was today (already exhausted!) and my 23 babies come Monday!

Now, you know I love LOVE what I do, but I'd be lying if I said I was too thrilled about my summer ending.

Oh well....all good things must come to an end I suppose.

Here's to hoping for a good start to the 2011-2012 school year!

I'm obsessed with Crime TV. In fact, some of my favorite shows include: 48 Hours Mystery, Unsolved Mysteries, and Dateline (and really anything that comes on the Investigation Discovery channel). I DVR all of it. I don't have a very vivid memory, but I do remember watching these types of shows (Perry Mason included!) as a child. Strange? Maybe. But I just think that perhaps in my former life I was a murder detective of some sort. I don't know.

Anyway, it's no surprise that I've been really caught up in the Casey Anthony trial. I've been keeping up with it from the beginning. So, obviously, I sat in my living room with my eyes glued to the TV on July 6th--the day the Casey Anthony verdict was announced.

I told myself that once the verdict was announced, I was going to not blog about it or obsess over it any more. But I just can't do it, people. I've just got to get this all out. I'm so fired up about this.

I was obviously not on the jury, nor do I really know all that goes into being a jury. It's something I hope I never have to experience. I can't help but wonder, though, what they were thinking?!

What mother in their right mind goes 31 days before reporting their missing child?! I'm not a mother, but I'm here to tell you that if either of my nephews were ever missing, it would be reported in seconds--not hours, days, or weeks, but seconds. Not only that, but Casey was spending her nights partying, all while that precious, innocent child is missing?! REALLY? And let's not forget about the nanny that was made up. You know, the one who Casey claimed Caylee was with?! Completely MADE.UP.

No. There's no smoking gun, and not necessarily proof that Casey actually killed her child, but come on people. It absolutely takes no genius to see that Casey absolutey had something to do with her child's murder. Am I wrong?

As a lover of all children, I'm completely sickened that Casey is getting away with this. No, I don't always agree that the death penalty is the way to go when punishing someone for a crime, but I do believe that justice should be served. I'm also a Christian, and realize that it's not our place to judge anyone. Ever. (Romans 12:14-21). But I'm having a tough time with this one. Casey Anthony had something to do with her precious baby girl's death. I just know it.

What more can we do to ensure that the innocent children in this world are being protected and not abused, neglected, or even murdered? Something has to change in our system. I have no idea what or how, but something does need to be done.

You may have seen this petition on facebook. I don't know how "legit" it is, but I think it's fabulous and needs to officially become a law. The petition is to adopt "Caylee's Law," which would make it a felony for a parent or guardian to go a certain amount of time without reporting their child missing. It wouldn't hurt you to sign it if you haven't already. I'm behind this 100%.

Bottom line here: Casey is getting off way too easily with this crime.

What are your thoughts and opinions about this case? Am I overreacting?

It may be a while before I can really get over this one. Children are, after all, my passion in life and they should be loved and protected; not neglected and murdered.

I want to hear your thoughs, and if you think Casey Anthony is innocent, I'd like to hear from you.

This is, in fact, my 4th blog post of the day. You may have hurried through the other 3, but please take time to read this one.

There's a precious 10 year old little girl that I'm very close to. In fact, I had the privilege of teaching her a few years ago. She's one of those little girls who is always happy, smiling (and dressed to a t!). She loves people, and she loves life! Her name is Georgia Grace (also known as "my little GG!") and I just think her sweet name fits her so well.

As an infant she underwent open heart surgery, and has to go to yearly check ups regarding her heart. At her most recent visit, it was determined that she would need to undergo yet another surgery to replace a pulmonary valve in her heart. This surgery is going to take place in the morning in Jackson.

She has a caring bridge site so that everyone can keep up with her process and recovery, and so we'll know how to specifically pray for her. It's accessible by clicking here. When asked for a password, type in "specialheart".

My sweet friend Heather has been planning her husband Tom's surprise 30th birthday party for months, all the while trying to keep it all a secret of course! She pulled it off well and did a fantastic job doing it!

It was at the Veranda here in Starkville the other night, and really was so much fun.

As you probably recall, I live in my grandparents' house. I love it here. I love finding things that remind me of happy times that I shared with my sweet Nana and Dada. Sometimes I'll also find small "reminders" that they're watching over me at all times. I truly believe they're my angels in heaven!

Yesterday I was cleaning my house and getting ready for company I was having later that night. I walked in the back yard to let Max out, when I looked over and noticed what was quite possibly the largest and most perfect lily I've ever seen! It was there, perfectly bloomed, and all by itself. There were no other flowers around it, and it didn't look like any would even be blooming anytime soon either. When I saw it, I smiled, and immediately thought of Nana. She loved flowers (just like me!), and I felt like it was her way of reminding me that she's watching over me and wants "her" house to look and smell great when my company arrived!

So special.

So...how cute is my new bulldog necklace?

I absolutely did not need a thing when I went in there today, but come on?! How in the world was I supposed to not buy this?

There's a new boutique in StarkVegas, and I'm in love with everything there. They haven't even been open 2 weeks yet, and I'm embarrassed to tell you how many times I've been in already! I've gotten a couple of fabulous pieces in there. And the best part? Everything is very reasonably priced! I got this necklace for only $16.95!

Oh, and if you think you just have to have a bully necklace like mine for football season, I think they still have some left! Kristen's dear childhood friend, Jessi has been mentioned a time or 2 on my blog. Perhaps you recall me mentioning her speaking at Nana's funeral earlier this year. She and Kristen have been friends since childhood. They graduated high school together, and were college roommates until Jessi moved to NYC. Jessi is a graphic designer and an artist, and is absolutely one of the most creative people I've ever known.

I follow her on twitter and read her blog regularly (you absolutely should check it out!).

Several months ago, she took on a challenge (read about it here). I was fascinated! I so enjoyed reading about this experience she had, while wondering how in the world I'd be able to manage such a thing! In fact, I'm quite sure I don't know a single other person who would take on such a task. She now talks publicly about her adventure, and was recently featured on TEDactive (pretty cool, huh?).

Anyway, here's the video of her talking about her experience.
Watch this video, and I guarantee you'll agree that this girl is one of the most intriguing, amazing, and beautiful people you've ever seen! She has a heart of gold and is a total joy to be around.

Orange Beach, Gulfport, and New Orleans!

You've probably noticed the beach ticker I've had at the top of my blog for the past few months. It's been counting down to my annual beach trip with my friend Heather! It's something that she and I look forward to every single summer. Of course, once it's come and gone, it's always a little sad, but we're just going to go ahead and start counting down to next year's trip! Here are a few pics from our week of heaven!

This picture was taken at Cobalt--a fabulous restaurant in Orange Beach. The atmosphere was perfect there! In the area? You should definitely go and have their shrimp and grits! YUMM!!!!!

Heather and I enjoyed having it to ourselves for a few days, but we were excited when Heather's husband Tom and little boy Thomas Brodie joined us on Thursday!
I think he loves the beach already!

I left Orange Beach on Thursday, and drove to Gulfport to get a visit in with Heather, Trey, and Jones. Rob had a tennis tournament on the MS coast, so he, Kristen, and Henry were also staying at Heather's for a few nights.

On Friday, Heather, Kristen, and I took the boys to the New Orleans Zoo. To say that H&J had fun is a total understatement! They loved everything about it!

The boys also enjoyed playing in the sand at the beach there in Gulfport! I can't wait for Kristen's little girl (whose name will be Noelle Adams Fyke!) to be born in the fall, but what in the world am I going to do with a girl?! :)

Today I'm thinking about...

1. my cousin Kyle.He was killed in a car accident in 1990 at the age of 17. Today would've been his 38th birthday. While I was only 9 when he passed away, I still think about him and miss him every day. I can't help but wonder what he would be like as a 38 year old.

I can't wait to see him again one day. What a day of rejoicing that will be!

2. Every single person who has ever served or who is currently serving in the U.S. Miltary.

Particularly these 2 great men, who both served in WWII:

- My Dada (deceased in 2006)and

-my Papaw (deceased in 1987)

I absolutely could not have been blessed with 2 greater, more respected men than my grandfathers.

I write this post not to sadden you, but to make you stop and:

a). Enjoy every second with those you love and

b). Stop what you're doing tomorrow and THANK A SOLDIER!

Happy birthday to my lovely mom!When it's one of my loved one's birthday, I sometimes like to make a list of the appropriate number of reasons why I love that particular person (ex. if it's your 27th birthday, I may make a list of 27 reasons why I love you!). Since I'm pretty sure my mom would not want me to disclose her age on my blog, I'm just going to make a list of 22 things that I love about her. You know...since it's May 22nd. Don't get me wrong. Given the opportunity, I could come up with eleventy billion reasons why I love her, but I'll limit it for now.

Here you go!

1. She's an all around beautiful person. If you think she's pretty on the outside, you should see what she's like on the inside!

2. What a giving person she is! If you look in the dictionary under the word "selfless," you will see a picture of my mom.

3. She sings beautifully.

4. She cooks fabulously.

5. She's my mom, 3rd sister, and best friend all in one. I don't spend time with her because I feel like I have to. I choose to spend time with her.

6. She sets an amazing example to EVERYBODY she encounters.

7. She's the best grandmother to those sweet boys, and oh how they love their "Lita"!

8. The definition of the word love is: "Seeking the best for others regardless of its cost to you." Yep. That's my mom.

9. She stood in the heat to support me during my half marathon a couple of years ago and didn't complain once. She hates to sweat.

10. She's calm. ALWAYS. You should spend time with her whenever you're stressed.

11. She listens.

12. She is Max's 2nd favorite person. He loves her.

13. She ~~helps me do~~ does my taxes for me EVERY YEAR.

14. She's a huge sports fan and loves the bulldogs as much as I do!

15. She's the most perfect person I know.

16. She's organized. Beyond description.

17. She's the smartest person I know. She's the 4.0 highschool valedictorian, who can beat anybody at Jeopardy. (Thanks for my brains, Dad! :))

18. She and my dad have set the ultimate example of what a Christian-based marriage looks like.

19. She knows every word to every hymn in a Baptist Hymnal, and can quote scriptures from the Bible like nobody I've ever seen.

20. She's my role model. You can probably understand that after reading #1-19.

21. She loves her family more than life itself.

22. She's the best.mom.ever.

Prayer request:

A coworker of mine and her family were involved in a serious car accident yesterday, resulting in the death of her 11 year-old son. She and another one of her sons were airlifted to Jackson with serious injuries. I've been told that their conditions are serious, but that the doctors expect them both to make a slow, but complete recovery. Thank God.

She's a wonderful person, and a fantastic teacher assistant. The 11 year-old who lost his life was a reading student of mine several years ago. I remember him being a good kid who loved his mom!

Pray for the recovery of Ms. Gandy and her son, and for the entire family is they cope with the tragic loss of Ms. Gandy's youngest son. Click here for more info.

Tomorrow is the last day with my 2nd graders, and you better believe my students will leave my classroom tomorrow knowing just how much they're loved.

This is such a sad, sad situation that reminds me how short life can be.

Top 3 and a hobby maybe?

I love Haley. I love Scotty. I love Lauren.

I'm not sure what's going to happen here. If you had asked me 2 hours ago, I would've told you that I was convinced that Haley would get the boot after tonight, but did you see her performances? She just has such a unique voice, and I like her.

Now, Scotty? He's the cutie pie country music singer. I'm a sucker for artists like Jake Owen and Josh Turner. There's just something a little sexy about a guy who can reach those low notes. Whether he wins this competition or not, he'll be successful. No doubt.

And I would have to say that out of the 3, Lauren has been the most consistent. I fell in love with her when I first saw her audition. While her voice is amazing, I'm worried that she may not have that unique touch it takes to win the competition. Still--she was amazing tonight!

I have been unable to vote, because if I did, I would probably have to vote for them equally, and that just doesn't make much sense, now does it?What's going to happen tomorrow night?

Aren't you excited about the season finale next week? I am!

Now, what is this hobby that I speak of?

Well...that's where I need your help.

You may recall my previous post: 30 things I learned in my 20s. Number 20 on my list stated that I think everyone should have a hobby or 2, and I mentioned that I wanted to turn over a new leaf now that I'm 30. I think I'd like to step out on a limb and learn how to do something new this summer. I am pretty active, so I'm not really wanting to learn how to play a new sport or anything that requires physical activity. (Plus, I'm pretty sure I'm too old to take up soccer or gymnastics).
I'm actually leaning more along the lines of something "crafty"--like sewing, knitting, monogramming (though I'm afraid it may be too expensive), etc. --- or possibly even something musical. I'm no singer, nor do I own any musical instrument, but I do think that it would be fun to learn how to play the guitar or re-learn how to play the piano.

I just want to find something that I enjoy doing during any free time I may have during my summer. I'd like to find something that is relaxing and fun and NOT anything that's too stressful! :) I also can't afford for my "new hobby" to cost too much money, so I'm sure that's going to put a limit on some things too.

How can you help me decide how to spend my summer?

Who doesn't love coffee? I know for a fact that I would be a complete monster without my cup every morning.

I want to talk to you a little about a dear friend of mine.

She's a school counselor at a school in the Nashville area, and recently founded an organization called the "G.I.R.L.S. (Girls in Real Life Situations) Ranch." This is a place where troubled girls can go if they're experiencing tough real-life situations. I began praying for Shannon when she first shared this vision with me, but I never imagined that it would take off the way it has. It amazes me and makes me so proud to think about the number of lives she's touching. If you take some time to read her blog, you'll find a number of ways to help this incredible organization.

MIRACLE

Hopefully by now you've been following the Krull's blog about their sweet Lucy. I've blogged about her several different times.

A couple of days ago, I asked you to read a post from Lucy's mom crying out for extra prayers for her sweet girl.

I was in tears this morning when I read what Kate (Lucy's mom) had to say this morning. While they still have a long way to go and probably more trials to face, God is absolutely listening to those prayers and the Krulls ARE receiving some answers.

Now--I dare anybody to tell me that there isn't a God!

Read Kate's most recent post titled "Miracles," and I bet, if you're an unbeliever, that post will have you believing!

Even though I'm not a mother, I know without a doubt that being a mother is the hardest job in the world (teaching is a close second though!), so I think it's so important that a day is made JUST for them!

I spent the weekend with my parents on the coast visiting H, T, and J to celebrate Mother's Day and Heather's birthday.

I was happy to spend the weekend with these to fabulous moms!I'm blessed to have my mom and I'm so proud of the mom my sister has become. That boy sure does love her!I think he loves his LaLa too!It was our first Mother's Day without Nana, so she was thought about and missed all day. I'm so blessed to still have one living grandparent and was so glad to get to see HER on Mother's Day too!
I hope all of you moms out there took a load off yesterday and allowed others do for YOU for a change!

So, my dad's bank hosted the MSU/Alabama tournament last weekend and Dad was asked to throw the first pitch at the game Sunday. My dad's response: "I'd be happy to walk to the mound, but I think I know a 4 year old who'd rather throw that first pitch."

And guess who that 4 year old was...To say that Henry was excited is a complete understatement! I'm pretty sure it was as close to heaven as he's ever experienced. He definitely thought he was something special. In fact, when walking into the game, he told the ticket-takers that he "didn't need a ticket because he was one of the players."

Precious.

(Oh, and of course they let him in. :) )

The players were so sweet to him! After his "pitch," they all high-fived him and signed a baseball for him. He held on to that ball for the rest of the afternoon!

Umm...did you SEE this dress?

Stunning.

I admit--I didn't become crazy obsessed with the Royal Wedding like so many other people. I knew that I'd see replay after replay and a bazillion pictures of the event, so I didn't feel the need to watch every second of it or even really record it (muchless take off work like some people did!).

I do think they're both beautiful though, and it really did look like a true fairy tale wedding!Yay Will and Kate!

And seriously, Kate, I.want.that.dress.

According to one of the recent reports, the recent tornadoes in the South have taken the lives of

131 people in Alabama

32 people here in Mississippi

30 people in Tennessee

13 people in Georgia

8 people in Virginia and

1 person in Kentucky.

This is the highest tornado death toll in nearly 40 years.

Unbelievable.

I'm so very happy that Meredith, Claire, and I ended up not heading to Tuscaloosa yesterday, because we probably would have been caught up in this:

Please pray for all of the people affected by these horrific tornadoes, particularly in Alabama.
Things like this sure do make you appreciate your life and the lives of those you love.
